Embrace Change: Wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita

A collection item for reflection, revisiting, and discussion.

Prabhupada, Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 13

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा।
तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति॥

Pronunciation: dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā
tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati

Meaning: Just as the soul in this body passes through childhood, youth, and old age, in the same manner, it achieves another body; the wise are not bewildered by this.

Reflection

This verse from the Bhagavad Gita emphasizes the concept of the eternal soul. It highlights how the soul transitions through different phases of life within a single body. Childhood, youth, and old age are transcended as mere stages while the soul remains unchanged. When the body no longer serves its purpose, the soul continues its journey by taking on a new form.

This cyclical understanding of life encourages detachment from the physical form and its temporal changes. The physical body is likened to clothing that is outgrown and replaced. The wise, recognizing this continuity of the soul, face life's changes with calmness and poise, knowing that true identity is not bound to the body.

In this view, life and death are seen as parts of a natural, ongoing process. This helps alleviate fear of death and attachment to the transient aspects of life, offering peace and stability through an understanding of this deeper reality.

Practical Application

In modern life, this wisdom can be applied by embracing change as a natural process rather than resisting it. Whether it’s transitioning roles in your career, moving locations, or adapting to aging, remembering the transient nature of these changes can help. By focusing on your enduring qualities and inner growth, you can face life’s shifts with resilience and calmness.
