Trusting in Uncertainty: Finding Faith Beyond Worry

A collection item for reflection, revisiting, and discussion.

Kabir

माला फेरत जुग भया, गया न मन का फेर। कर का मनका डार दे, मन का मनका फेर॥

Pronunciation: mālā pherat jug bhayā, gayā na man kā pher। kar kā mankā ḍār de, man kā mankā pher॥

Translation: Turning the rosary beads for ages has not transformed the mind. Discard the beads in hand, change the beads of the mind.

In the quiet hours of the night, Maya sat by the window, glancing repeatedly at her mobile phone. Her teenage son, Rohit, was traveling back from college on a late-night train, and uncertainty filled her heart. Each passing moment felt like eternity as she pondered over his safety and the many 'what-ifs' that clouded her mind.

Unraveling Worry

Imagine a dimly lit room where a family anxiously awaits the outcome of a loved one's surgery. The ticking clock seems to echo their hearts' trepidations. In these moments, each second stretches endlessly, burdened by the weight of uncertainty. As they huddle together, whispers of prayers fill the air, hoping to transform the waiting into something bearable.

Kabir's wisdom shines through in these shadows of doubt. A devotee recites one of his teachings: "Kaal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab," urging them to focus not on an imagined future but on the present task of unwavering faith. This doesn't lead them to inaction; instead, they support each other—offering comforting words, sharing memories that lighten the atmosphere, and tending to rituals that ground them.

Kabir's message is clear—faith is not idle waiting but a profound surrender after one has done all they can. It is the quiet strength found in uncertainty, where faith transforms inner turmoil into acceptance. Such trust doesn’t guarantee the outcome, but it shifts the turmoil within, offering a tranquil refuge amidst the storm of unknowing.

The Difference Between Surrender and Passivity

Kabir’s wisdom, as reflected in his dohas, explains this balance eloquently. One evening, as Maya faced an uncertain outcome regarding her son Rohit's exam results, the tension in the household was palpable. The air seemed thick with her unspoken worries. She had done everything possible—hiring tutors, encouraging Rohit during late-night study sessions, and ensuring his well-being. Yet, the final outcome was beyond her control.

Walking to her prayer room, she took a deep breath, recalling Kabir's words: “Man lago Mero Yaar Fakiri Mein.” The essence of the doha speaks to the contentment found in a heart unburdened by material concerns and full of trust.

Maya lit a diya, letting the warm light fill the room, symbolic of the hope she held. With folded hands, she whispered a prayer, not for specific results, but for strength to accept whatever came next. This act of faith was not avoidance but a conscious choice to embrace uncertainty with grace, allowing her heart to find peace beyond mere outcomes. Faith, she understood, was transformative—not in converting obstacles, but in reshaping her response to them. It fostered resilience and allowed her to approach life’s uncertainties with an inner calmness cultivated through devotion.

Kabir’s Insightful Guidance

Kabir’s famous doha encapsulates this philosophy beautifully. He suggests that without inner transformation, external actions become mere motions. Imagine a weary traveler in the vast expanses of uncertainty, burdened by the weight of decisions to be made and outcomes unknown. Kabir’s words come as a guiding light: "Man ka sudhaar, jag ka sudhaar." The traveler pauses, contemplating the true essence of these words while sitting under a tree, feeling the gentle breeze as a reminder of the world’s natural rhythm.

In the stillness, a realization dawns—the heart’s tumult can settle like the calm in nature. Effort and action are essential, like planning the next part of the journey, but they must stem from an inner place of clarity and faith, not from frantic worry. With each decision, an act of surrender balances effort, allowing trust to replace anxiety. True change occurs within as faith transforms the traveler’s perception, ushering peace to persist, irrespective of the outcome. Kabir’s wisdom lies in showing that faith is the alchemy that turns the base metal of worry into the gold of inner peace, reminding that while the journey continues, the steps taken with trust resonate deeper within the soul.

Faith as an Inner Transformation

Maya sat by the window, watching the raindrops race down the glass, each drop mirroring her own swirling thoughts. Her son Rohit had been unwell, and the doctors still hadn't pinpointed the cause of his persistent fever. The waiting room was filled with faint murmurs and the beeping of machines, creating a natural tension in her chest.

Months ago, she might have spiraled into worry, but today, Maya turned to the wisdom of Kabir. As she recited his doha, "Kabira garv na keejiye, kansi hoye na vishal," she was reminded of the impermanence of life's challenges and the futility of becoming consumed by them.

Faith did not render her passive; instead, it prompted Maya to delve deep into her spiritual practice, to offer prayer with sincerity, and to ensure she stayed vigilant in Rohit's care. Yet, her heart was slowly transforming. In accepting uncertainty, faith taught her patience without resignation, allowing her to maintain a grounded presence for Rohit.

In that moment of devotion, Maya understood that faith was not about removing obstacles but about the courage to face them with a balanced mind. Her actions remained steady, and within, she felt a quiet transformation—an unwavering trust in both the divine and her own ability to endure.

A Simple Practice of Trust

Incorporating a simple practice of silent reflection or prayer in moments of uncertainty can be transformative. Setting aside a few moments to focus on deep breathing, releasing tension, and silently affirming trust can work wonders. Maya found that as she shifted her focus from worry to prayer, she felt enveloped in a sense of peace.

As Rohit's familiar footsteps echoed through the hallway, Maya's heart filled with relief. The moments of uncertainty tested her resolve, yet reaffirmed her faith. Each of us, in our own unique struggles, finds similar opportunities to transform inner turbulence into serene acceptance.
